Artist Statement
The intersection of intention and freedom is central to my process. Exploring this junction has become a form of mindfulness for me, and helps remove ego from the equation. I want my pieces to grow within my parameters, but to simultaneously exist by their own means.
The lines, shapes, and colors that mark the beginning of a new piece take on their own life. I allow them to swell, breathe, and interact with one another. This approach results in a kind of organic growth, guided primarily by free association, impulse, and play.
Through pen and ink, my drawings often take on a cellular nature through replication and variance, developing into asymmetric patterns similar to what we see in nature and biology. My paintings and mixed media are completed through a similar process, but extend beyond the unit into the simplified interaction of space, color, and transparency.
